A blog post titled Why Jesus Should Not Be Your Friend caught my attention this morning. At first I thought it was just another one of those rants from atheists or people who do not believe in God, but turns out it was a very spiritually enriching piece. So, I decided to make an entry of my reflections from that post.
A lot of Catholics these days perceive Jesus as their friend–in fact, some even say Jesus is their very best friend. While this is not wrong as Jesus said in John 15:15: “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” A lot of us may have become “too comfortable” with Christ that we no longer give him the reverence and respect that he is due.
For sure, God wants to be in relationship with us, however we would do well not to treat this relationship flippantly. He can be our friend, but we should keep in mind that he is not just any friend, he is the maker of the entire universe, the owner of our lives and our supreme master.
