Praying the Rosary Before Bed

“Is it wrong to lie in bed praying the rosary until you fall asleep, when you have trouble sleeping? I’ve done it. My husband is scrupulous and feels this is wrong and disrespectful. He is the insomniac – gets very little sleep at night, has tried everything, etc. Yet – during our daily rosary he invariably gets drowsy and falls asleep. It’s been like this for years. I tell him, “why don’t you pray the rosary, that always puts you to sleep?” But for him this is out of the question, because the intent is wrong. Me, I think it’s fine, it’s better than thinking dumb thoughts or worrying while waiting to fall sleep…” – “Rosary as a Sleep Aid”, Catholic Answers Forum

This question was a featured post over on The Catholic Answers Forum, and I thought it was a good one. I think that falling asleep in prayer is probably the best way you can fall asleep! I cannot believe that this woman’s husband thinks it is wrong to fall asleep praying. The wife raises a valid point, all anybody does when falling asleep is concentrate on random thoughts. So why not use that time as time for prayer? In my opinion there is no wrong time to pray!

  1. David S. says:

I agree with your mentality on this one. There cannot be a wrong time to pray, and your intent cannot be the wrong one either.

  2. I don’t think that your view is right at all actually. I think this woman’s husband has it correct. You should not pray with intentions of falling asleep, that is not right.

  3. MyCatholicBlog says:

Anne I respect your decision, but I wish you would see eye to eye with David and myself. The intention isn’t of falling asleep. I become very calm and relaxed when I pray and I think that it is a good way to relax and become ready for sleep. It could be especially helpful for somebody suffering from sleeping problems.

  4. I was looking for the answer to this question myself. I think that praying is an AWESOME way to end your day,as we all know that we were always to say our prayers and repent before we go to bed. I am glad I finally recieved the answer I was looking for that it is ok to pray the rosary at any time of the day or night. I also like to listen to catholic radio as I fall to sleep at night. It puts your mind and heart at ease as you drift off to your sleep. Happy prayers, and may you all have sweet dreams because of your awesome prayers….***GOD BLESS***

    • So happy you found the answer you were looking for. I can’t imagine that God wouldn’t hear the prayers of his people anytime they’re offered. God will give you rest.

  5. I heard in the channel EWTN Catholic TV once someone said that if one falls asleep praying the Rosary your guardian angels pick up where you fell asleep and finish it for you! I think that us so charming as well as a relief 😉

    • Saint Bernadette: “At night when you retire to rest, take your beads and go to sleep while saying them; do the same as little children who fall asleep saying: ‘Mamma, Mamma …’”
