Understanding God is Not the Goal

I have three quotes to share with you today:

1. “God is the incomprehensible, the invisible, the ungraspable.” – St. John Chrysostom

2. “If it can be understood, it is not God.” – St. Augustine

3. “We cannot grasp what he is, but only what he is not.  Whatever can be understood, or thought of, is less than God.”  – St. Thomas Aquinas

I got all these quotes from a wonderful post called, “Mistaken about His Mercy.” Here the author writes about the all too common question , “Why does God do as He does?” He beautifully writes about how difficult it is to fathom the mind and purpose of God, and how satisfying it can be to realize that none of us need to know everything about our Lord.

As Christians, we need to grow our faith more and trust God more and rely less on our own understanding. As God says in the Scriptures, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9).
